Nous avons choisi « Corps de Synthèse » comme thématique pour présenter des corporéités particulières issues d’un lieu précis, issues d’Istanbul en Turquie.<br /><br />A l’exception de Devrim Alpöge, artiste parisien-stambouliote invité, les membres du collectif boDig vivent à Istanbul. Ils sont très réceptifs aux stimuli de leur environnement physique et culturel. L’objectif de cette exposition n’est pas de présenter Istanbul comme une altérité, mais de proposer une approche de la corporéité à travers la perception des artistes, du dynamisme urbain issu de la diversité culturelle, ses antagonismes et son foisonnement.<br /><br />Istanbul est une ville où une multitude de corps, de sons et d’odeurs s’inscrivent dans un mouvement incessant. La ville exerce sur ses habitants un pouvoir difficilement imaginable pour des non initiés. Le rythme, la vitesse de la vie urbaine stambouliote envahit les individus, ce qui engendre une énergie particulière : des corps sensibles à l’environnement, des comportements libres et spontanés perméables aux sensations créées par les flux de la ville. Cette corporéité est mise en avant à travers le mouvement, la proximité, les contacts physiques…<br /><br />Les artistes du collectif boDig collaborent aux projets à des niveaux divers et variés. Leurs engagements en dehors du domaine de l’art sont autant de richesses pour chacun des projets menés : ils sont critique, journaliste, enseignant, scénographe, chorégraphe, vidéaste, designer, technicien, photographe… Ils portent tous un intérêt prononcé pour le corps dans son rapport à la technologie et au monde contemporain.<br /><br />L’exposition « Corps de Synthèse » s’ouvre aux visiteurs avec l’installation <strong><em>Mission Possible</em></strong> de Devrim Alpöge. Cet artiste invité est un vidéaste parisien d’origine turque, qui porte un regard décalé à la vie quotidienne avec ses courts métrages. Dans ses œuvres, il présente une autre réalité des choses, des relations et des situations souvent teintées d’humour. Les gestes et les mimiques, les comportements sociaux du corps en général sont à l’origine de son travail. Ici, Alpöge prépare une installation vidéo en forme de jeu, dans le contexte de la « perception de la Turquie en France ». Il renvoie aux visiteurs les préjugés du grand public envers la Turquie et ses habitants. En exposant librement ces clichés, il fait état de l’absurdité de ces questions avec humour. D’emblée, cette installation permet aux visiteurs de recontextualiser la question de la Turquie.<br /><br />La deuxième installation est celle de Beliz Demircioglu Cihandide, une chorégraphe et artiste nouveaux médias. Avec <strong><em>Intouch</em></strong> (En contact), elle offre un premier contact corporel au visiteur par le biais de la main. Elle souligne l’importance du toucher dans la relation sociale, et celle du temps comme indispensable pour se comprendre, critiquant ainsi le consumérisme au sein des relations humaines. Le visiteur est invité à toucher une main accrochée au mur afin de voir apparaitre des images. Suite à cet effleurement de la main, les images vidéo se transforment, créant alors un sentiment de profondeur chez le spectateur.<br /><br />Plus loin, au fond de la salle se dresse une structure plutôt ronde. L’intérieur est de couleur claire et donne une impression de légèreté avec des voiles flottants suspendus du haut des murs. Au milieu, se trouve un petit « ney », l’instrument à vent, et en face un écran blanc, rond. Ainsi la photographe et artiste nouveaux médias Gülay Yigitcan, dans son installation <strong><em>The Breath of Life</em></strong> (Le souffle de la vie), invite-t-elle le visiteur à interagir en soufflant dans le ney. Selon l’intensité du souffle du visiteur, différentes séquences de son se déclenchent ainsi que différentes séquences de vidéo apparaissent. La durée du souffle correspond à la durée de l’image. Gülay revisite donc la pratique traditionnelle du soufisme, une pratique dédiée à la relation entre le corps, le mouvement et le souffle, pour parler de la transmission d’une certaine sensibilité du corps à travers le temps et jusqu’à nos pratiques numériques.<br /><br />Ensuite, le visiteur a la possibilité de se placer devant des moniteurs pour sentir les odeurs qui émanent de l’installation <strong><em>Encounters_2/Hyperosmia</em></strong> (Rencontres_2/Hyperosmie). C’est une installation interactive olfactive que j’ai conçue avec les artistes du collectif boDig. Travailler avec l’odeur comme matériau dans une installation est un véritable enjeu, un champ tout nouveau à explorer pour boDig. L’idée vient simplement de la ville d’Istanbul elle-même, par son abondance d’odeurs, agréables et désagréables. Si le visiteur s’approche de l’un des trois moniteurs, il perçoit quelque chose qui lui permet peut-être de se plonger dans la « mémoire involontaire proustienne », et des séquences vidéo de parties du corps en mouvement se déclenchent. L’installation peut être visitée par six personnes en même temps, leurs mouvements pouvant provoquer des mélanges d’odeurs de façon aléatoire.<br /><br /><strong><em>The Crowd In Us</em></strong> (La foule en nous) est une autre installation de Beliz Demircioglu Cihandide dans laquelle l’artiste aborde la relation synthétique du temps au mouvement. Pour elle, Istanbul est une ville qui se présente en une multiplicité de temps. Elle met donc en place une superposition de différents vécus en temps réel, chacun surgissant en relation avec les mouvements et les déplacements du visiteur. Le spectateur se trouve ici et ailleurs, dans l’expérience du présent et du passé, et dans le jeu d’interaction entre ces deux temporalités.<br /><br />Osman Koç, un jeune artiste travaillant avec les nouveaux médias, propose une installation sonore avec <strong><em>Living Istanbul</em></strong> (Istanbul, la vivante). Le visiteur met des capteurs sur certaines parties de son corps et entend par le biais de son pouls, les sons quotidiens d’Istanbul – comme dans le poème assez connu d’Orhan Veli Kanik <em>J’écoute Istanbul les yeux clos</em> –. L’artiste juxtapose ici le dynamisme de la ville et celui du corps. Ici, le pouls sert d’interface pour produire les sons d’une ville. D’une part, le corps est conçu en tant qu’objet capable de déclencher des sons et d’autre part, comme un sujet capable de les recevoir. Ce dispositif situe donc le corps entre l’état actif et passif, situation dans laquelle celui-ci trouve une existence par son propre rythme, le pouls, comme une extension du corps qui « toucherait » l’espace sonore d’une ville.<br /><br /><strong><em>The Belly Dancing Kit</em></strong> (Le kit de la danse du ventre) est la seconde installation sonore d’Osman Koç. Il faut non seulement revêtir le dispositif sur le corps mais aussi bouger avec. Le visiteur essaie de trouver le bon rythme dans son mouvement pour que le son se produise avec une certaine régularité. Cette installation humoristique remet en cause l’un des clichés touristiques et populaires dans sa vulgarité : la danse du ventre. Le dispositif est composé d’une ceinture passée autour de la taille du visiteur et d’un miroir placé sur le mur qui reflète dans toute sa simplicité les expériences de « l’inter-acteur ».<br /><br /><strong><em>Urban Squeeze</em></strong> (La densité urbaine) est une installation conçue par Gülay Yigitcan, Kemal Yigitcan et Cem Uzunoglu, autour d’une approche corporelle face à l’urbanisation rapide d’Istanbul avec ses 14 millions d’habitants. L’espace de l’installation se rétrécit physiquement avec les images vidéo dès l’entrée du visiteur. La vidéo y représente la transformation d’un paysage en un amas de bétons et la diminution de l’espace individuel de ses habitants. Le corps démuni de son propre espace n’a plus qu’à quitter le lieu.<br /><br />Avec toutes ces installations, quelques questions se posent alors : qu’est-ce qui, dans leurs démarches, amène ces artistes à construire un lien si fort avec leur environnement et ce, en plein processus d’adhésion de la Turquie à l’Union européenne, à la veille de l’événement Istanbul 2010 Capitale européenne de la culture, et dans le cadre de la Saison de la Turquie en France ? Est-ce une réévaluation de l’identité culturelle face à des exigences politiques ? Est-ce une nostalgie, une résistance, une manifestation de leur manière d’être au monde ? Quelles sont les politiques du corps en jeu pour ces jeunes artistes ? Les visiteurs se voient proposer plusieurs pistes de réflexion et ce, non seulement à travers le parcours de cette exposition mais aussi par le biais de ces artistes turcs, capables ainsi de formuler le début de quelques réponses à ces questionnements.<br /><br /><br />*définition extraite du dictionnaire « Le Larousse »<br /></span><br /></span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;">in English:<br /><br /></span><span style="color:#3366ff;"><strong>Bodies of Synthesis<br /></strong><br /></span><span style="color:#3366ff;"><em>Aylin Kalem</em></span><br /><span style="color:#3366ff;"><em>Director of the boDig collective<br /></em><br />To talk about the body is to already convene an entity of synthesis per se which <em>gathers or re-unites in itself elements of diverse origins</em>* not only biologically but also sociologically and culturally. We have chosen “the body of synthesis” as theme in order to present particular corporeality which arises from a precise locality that is Istanbul / Turkey.<br /><br />With the exception of Devrim Alpöge, -the Turkish origin guest artist living in Paris- all the members of the boDig collective live in Istanbul. They are very receptive of the stimuli of their physical and cultural environment. Therefore, the objective of the exhibition is not to present Istanbul as an alterity but to propose an approach to corporeality through the artists’ perception of the urban dynamism issued from cultural diversity, conflicts and all sorts of abundance.<br /><br />Istanbul is a city where a multitude of bodies, sounds and smell is inscribed in an incessant movement. The city is exercising on its inhabitants a power which can hardly be imagined by an outsider. The energy, rhythm and speed of the urban life of Istanbul invade its people, creating a particular corporeality: bodies susceptible to the environment, free and spontaneous behaviours permeable to the sensations created by the flux of the city. The corporeality is put forth through touch, movement, proximity, physical contacts…<br /><br />The artists of the boDig collective collaborate with each other in various levels. They are also involved in many activities outside arts & new media. They are critic, journalist, instructor, dramaturg, choreographer, video artist, designer, technician, photographer… They all have an interest towards the body in its relation to technology and the contemporary world.<br /><br />The exhibition is introduced with <strong><em>Mission Possible</em></strong> by Devrim Alpöge. This guest artist is a Parisian video artist of Turkish origin, who maintains a shifted gaze towards daily life with his short films. In his works, he presents an alter reality of things, relations and situations often with a touch of humour. The gestures and mimics, the social bodily actions in general are at the origin of his works. Here, Alpöge prepares a video installation in the form of a game, within the context of the “perception of Turkey in France”. He sends back to the visitors, the prejudgements of the general public towards Turkey and its inhabitants. By freely exposing these clichés, he emphasises with humour, the absurdity of these questions. Thus, this installation provides the visitors with a reflexion on the Turkish context.<br /><br />The second installation in the itinerary of the exhibition is that of Beliz Demircioğlu Cihandide, choreographer and a new media artist. With <strong><em>Intouch</em></strong>, she offers a first bodily contact to the visitor through the hand. She emphasises the importance of the touch in social relation, and time as unavoidable for mutual understanding, in the form of a critique of the consumption of the human relations by speed. The visitor is encouraged to touch the hand which is attached to the wall in order to visualise the images. The video images transform with time, following the touch. Beliz creates here, a feeling of depth to invite the spectator to her proposal.<br /><br />Further, at the end of the exhibit space, there stands a structure rather round. The interior is of bright colour and gives an impression of lightness with floating curtains suspended from the top of the walls. In the centre, there is a small “ney” (a blowing instrument) and a round white screen across. Gülay Yiğitcan, photographer and a new media artist invites thus, the visitor to interact by blowing the ney in her installation <em><strong>The Breath of Life</strong></em>. Regarding the intensity of the blow, different sequences of sound and video will be triggered. The duration of the blow corresponds to the duration of the image. Hence, Gülay re-visits the traditional practice of <em>Sufism</em>, -a practice dedicated to the relation among the body, the movement and the breath- in order to put forward the transmission of a certain sensitivity of the body across time, towards our digital practices.<br /><br />Up the stairs, the visitor can stand in front of the monitors in order to smell the odours, which the installation <strong><em>Encounters_2/Hyperosmia</em></strong> reveals. This is an interactive olfactive installation which I have conceived with the boDig collective. Working with the odour in an installation is a challenge, a completely new field of exploration for boDig. The idea comes simply from the city of Istanbul itself, from its abundance of all kinds of smell, pleasing and displeasing. If the visitor approaches one of the three monitors, he will sense a smell which will perhaps provide him to immerse in a sort of “Proustian involuntary memory”, and the video sequences of the body parts in movement will be triggered. The installation can be visited by up to six people at a time, their presence triggering a random mix of smells.<br /><br /><strong><em>The Crowd In Us</em></strong> is another installation of Beliz Demircioğlu Cihandide in which she addresses the synthetic relation of time to movement. Departing from the impression that Istanbul is a city that presents itself in a multiplicity of time, the artist puts forward in real-time a superposition of different times emerging in relation to the movement of the visitor. The spectator finds himself here and there, experiencing the present and the past, and in the play of interaction in-between.<br /><br />Osman Koç, a young artist working in new media proposes a sound installation with <strong><em>Living Istanbul</em></strong>. The visitor will listen to the daily sounds of Istanbul – as in the well-known poem of Orhan Veli Kanık <em>I am listening to Istanbul my eyes closed</em>- through his own pulse by putting sensors on certain parts of his body. The artist juxtaposes the dynamism of the city with that of the body. Here, the pulse serves as an interface to produce the sounds of a city. On the one hand, the body is conceived as an object, like a tool that triggers the sounds, and on the other hand, as a subject that receives the sounds. This system positions the body in a state between active and passive, in a situation in which the body finds a new existence through the pulse –as an extension of the body- in order to “touch” the soundscape of a city.<br /><br /><em><strong>The Belly Dancing Kit</strong></em> is the second sound installation of Osman Koç. This time, it will not be enough to put the device on the body but also to move with it. The visitor will try to find a good rhythm in his movement so that the producing sound will be in a certain regularity. This humoristic installation tackles with a touristic and popular cliché in all its vulgarity: the belly dancing. The system is composed of a belt put around the waist of the visitor and of a mirror, simply reflecting the experiences of the “interactor”.<br /><br /><strong><em>Urban Squeeze</em></strong> is an installation designed by Gülay Yiğitcan, Kemal Yiğitcan and Cem Uzunoğlu, around a bodily approach to Istanbul’s rapid urban growth with its 14 million of inhabitants. The space of the installation will be physically shrunk once the visitor enters. The video represents the transformation of a landscape into a heap of concrete, and the diminution of the personal space of its inhabitants. Deprived of its space, the body is left with nothing but to leave the installation.<br /><br />With all these installations, some questions arouse: what brings these artists to establish a strong link with their environment, in the process of the adhesion of Turkey to EU, on the eve of Istanbul 2010 - the European Capital of Culture, and within the frame of the Season of Turkey in France? Is this a re-evaluation of the cultural identity, facing the political requirements? Is this nostalgia, a resistance, a manifestation of their being-in-the-world? What body politics is at play for these young artists? Bu serginin amacı, İstanbul’u öteki olarak sunmak değil kültürel çeşitlilik, karşıtlık ve her türlü bolluğu içeren bir kent dinamizmi karşısında sanatçıların algıları üzerinden bedenselliğe bir yaklaşım önermektir.</em><br /><em></em><br /><em>İstanbul, pek çok beden, ses ve kokunun durmak bilmeyen bir hareketlilikte içine işlediği bir kenttir. Bu şehrin kendi sakinleri üzerinde dışarıdan algılanması zor bir gücü vardır. İstanbul kent yaşamının ritmi ve hızı bireyleri ele geçirir ki bu da kendine has bir enerji doğurur: bulunduğu ortama duyarlı bedenler, şehrin akışının yarattığı duyumlara açık, özgür ve anlık beden davranış biçimleri. Böylesi bir bedensellik hareket, fiziksel mesafe ve temastan ileri gelir.</em><br /><em></em><br /><em>boDig üyeleri farklı biçimlerde ve seviyelerde birlikte çalışırlar. Yeni medya alanı dışında da çeşitli alanlarda üretim yapmaktadırlar. Eleştirmen, gazeteci, öğretim üyesi, dramaturg, koreograf, video sanatçısı, tasarımcı, teknisyen, fotoğraf sanatçısıdırlar. Her biri de bedene teknolojik ve çağdaş kapsamda yaklaşırlar.</em><br /><em></em><br /></span><span style="color:#999999;"><em>"Sentez Bedenler" sergisi ziyaretçilere Devrim Alpöge’nin <strong>Mission Possible</strong> (Mümkün Görev) yerleştirmesiyle açılır. Paris’te yaşayan bu konuk sanatçı, çalışmalarında gündelik yaşama farklı bakış getiren bir video sanatçısıdır. Kısa filmleri sıklıkla, ilişkilere ve durumlara ayrıksı bir gerçeklik getiren nükte barındırır. Genellikle çalışmalarına kaynak oluşturan malzemeler jestler, mimikler ve bedenin sosyal tutumlarıdır. Alpöge burada, "Fransa’daki Türkiye algısı" üzerine oyun biçiminde bir video hazırlar. Ziyaretçilere, Türkiye ve halkına yönelik genel Fransız önyargısını yansıtır. Klişeleşmiş yerleşik soruların saçmalığını nükteyle sunar. Böylelikle, bu yerleştirme ziyaretçilere Türkiye sorununu yeni bir bağlamda ele almalarını sağlar.<br /></em><br /><em>İkinci yerleştirme ise koreograf ve yeni medya sanatçısı Beliz Demircioğlu Cihandide’nindir. <strong>Intouch</strong> (Dokunarak) ile, ziyaretçi el yoluyla sergiyle ilk fiziksel temasını sağlar. Toplumsal ilişkide dokunmanın ve birbirini anlamada zamanın kaçınılmazlığının -insan ilişkilerinde tüketimin eleştirisini yaparcasına- önemini vurgular. Kişi, görüntünün oluşması için duvara monte edilmiş bir ele dokunmaya davet edilir. El temasının sonucunda görüntü dönüşür ve izleyicide derinlik hissi yaratılır.</em><br /><em></em><br /><em>Daha ileride, mekânın öteki ucunda yuvarlakça bir yapı durmaktadır. Yapının içi açık renktedir ve uçuşan tüllerle bir hafiflik hissi yaratılır. Ortada küçük bir ney, karşısında ise yuvarlak bir ekran vardır. Fotoğraf ve yeni medya sanatçısı Gülay Yiğitcan, <strong>The Breath of Life</strong> (Yaşamın Nefesi) adlı yerleştirmesinde böylelikle ziyaretçiyi neye üfleyerek etkileşime davet eder. Nefesin şiddetine göre, farklı sesler ve farklı video kesitleri harekete geçer. Nefesin süresi videonun süresini de belirler. Sanatçı bu yolla, beden, hareket ve nefes arasındaki ilişkiye adanan Sufi geleneğini yeni bir bakışla ele alır. Belli bir beden duyarlılığını, tarihsel yolculuğunda günümüzdeki dijital uygulamalara taşır.</em><br /><em></em><br /><em>Sergi ziyaretçisi bundan sonra, monitörlerin karşısında durarak <strong>Encounters_2/Hyperosmia</strong> (karşılaşmalar_2/Hiperosmi) adlı yerleştirmeden yayılacak kokuları duyabilir. Bu, benim boDig sanatçılarıyla birlikte oluşturduğum etkileşimli koku üzerine bir enstalasyondur. Koku üzerine çalışmak boDig için yeni bir araştırma alanıdır. Çıkış noktası, hoş ve nahoş kokuların bolluğuyla İstanbul kentinin ta kendisidir. Ziyaretçi üç monitörden birine yaklaştığında, Proustvari istemsiz belleğe benzer bir duyumsamaya yönelebilir ve beden bölümlerinden oluşan video kesitleri belirir. Yerleştirmeye aynı anda 6 kişi katılabilir, onların hareketiyle çeşitli karışımlarda koku yayılır.</em><br /><em></em><br /><em><strong>The Crowd In Us</strong> (İçimizdeki Kalabalık) zaman ve hareket arasındaki ilişki üzerine Beliz Demircioğlu Cihandide’nin bir başka yerleştirmesidir. Sanatçı bu çalışmasını İstanbul’un pek çok zamanı aynı anda yaşadığından yola çıkarak oluşturur. Ziyaretçinin hereketlerine ve mekânda yer değiştirmesine bağlı olarak farklı yaşanmışlıkları gerçek-zamanda üst üste gösterir. Katılımcı kendisini burada ve orada, şimdi ve geçmiş arasında, ve ikisi arasındaki etkileşim oyununda görür.</em><br /><em></em><br /><em>Yeni medya alanında çalışan genç sanatçı Osman Koç, <strong>Living Istanbul</strong> (Yaşayan İstanbul) adında bir ses enstalasyonu sunuyor. Katılımcı bu çalışmada, bedeninin çeşitli bölgelerine sensörler yerleştirir ve kendi nabzının atış hızına bağlı olarak İstanbul’un gündelik seslerini duyar, - Orhan Veli Kanık’ın "İstanbul’u dinliyorum gözlerim kapalı" adlı meşhur şiirine bir atıftır. Sanatçı burada, kentin dinamizmiyle bedeninkini üst üste bindirir. Nabız bu çalışmada, bir şehrin seslerini dinlemek için bir arayüze dönüşür. Beden, bir yandan sesleri harekete geçiren bir nesne olarak ele alınır, bir yandan da bunları algılayan bir öznedir. Böylelikle, bu düzenekte beden, kentin ses mekânına dokunan kendi ritmi ve nabzı sayesinde aktif ve pasif arasında bir yerde konumlanır.</em><br /><em></em><br /></span><span style="color:#999999;"><em><strong>The Belly Dancing Kit</strong> (Göbek Dansı Kiti) Osman Koç’un ikinci ses enstalasyonudur. Düzeneği üste giymek bu kez yeterli değildir, katılımcının hareket etmesi de beklenir. Ziyaretçinin, sesin düzgün bir şekilde çıkması için kendi bedeninde doğru bir ritm tutturması gerekir. Bu yerleştirme nükteli bir biçimde turistik ve popüler bir klişe olarak göbek dansını tüm kabalığıyla gözler önüne serer. Düzenek, ziyaretçinin beline takacağı bir kemer ve hareketlerini tüm basitliğiyle yansıtacak bir boy aynasından oluşur.<br /></em><br /><em><strong>Urban Squeeze</strong> (Kentsel sıkışıklık) Gülay Yiğitcan, Kemal Yiğitcan ve Cem Uzunoğlu’nun birlikte oluşturdukları, 14 milyon nüfuslu İstanbul’un hızlı kentsel dönüşümüne bedensel tepki veren bir yerleştirmedir. <br />L’idée de cette installation s’est imposée à moi à travers quelques-unes de mes préoccupations majeures : le regard négatif que les Français ont commencé à porter envers la Turquie ces dernières années, la place et l’utilisation de l’image dans les médias, le champ de représentation créé par l’outil numérique. En d’autres mots, j’ai voulu montrer aux Français une autre image de celle qu’ils ont l’habitude de voir dans les médias, beaucoup plus proche de la réalité objective grâce aux moyens techniques de la vidéo numérique.
<br />Pour ce faire, j’ai choisi de montrer les visages des Turcs car je nourris pour cette partie du corps une fascination voire une obsession. Lieu de formation de la parole, le visage permet de communiquer avec le monde extérieur. Les mimiques participent de cet échange au niveau émotionnel.
<br />De surcroit, les mimiques et les gestes font partie de notre patrimoine culturel traditionnel. Chaque pays a ses propres codes et le langage gestuel varie de région en région. Ainsi, on ne dit pas « non » de la même façon en France qu’en Turquie : alors que les Français remuent la tête de gauche à droite, les Turcs préfèrent lever la tête et les sourcils vers le ciel avec un petit bruit de langue.
<br />L’image projetée d’un visage joue le rôle d’un miroir et nous ramène inévitablement vers la psychanalyse et aux phénomènes de représentation du moi, du désir et de l’autre. Aussi, les visiteurs seront-ils peut-être confrontés à une sorte de miroir lacanien dans lequel ils essaieront d’identifier leur rapport à « l’Autre ».
<br />En réalisant le casting pour le tournage, j’ai voulu constituer un échantillon représentatif des Turcs. En effet, les personnes qui sont réunies sur les vidéos sont à peu près à l’image de cette population jeune, multiethnique et multi religieuse. Ce sont de véritables « têtes de Turc » ! Mais le jeu de mot n’est pas de trop ici tant on a l’impression que les hommes politiques français ont tendance à confondre l’expression et le peuple auquel il fait référence.
<br />Pour ces visages enfouis dans le noir, éclairés par la gauche comme dans la peinture occidentale classique, je me suis inspiré de certaines vidéos de Bill Viola comme Anima, Dolorosa, The Quintet of the Astonished (2000). Ce vidéaste américain m’a en effet beaucoup influencé dans sa façon d’appréhender la forme (utilisation du format vertical) et de concevoir ses vidéos expérimentales (présence d’un schéma quasi narratif).
<br />Préparer l’installation sous forme de jeu vidéo présentait l’avantage d’être pédagogique. J’avais envie de lutter contre les préjugés sur les Turcs en proposant des informations intéressantes aux visiteurs. Le jeu m’a permis de le faire d’une façon ludique.
<br />Aujourd’hui, les outils numériques permettent d‘accéder à des truquages beaucoup plus facilement et de fusionner des éléments de source variée. Ainsi, grâce à des logiciels multimédia, il a d’abord été possible de rassembler les huit personnages dans une même séquence. Ensuite il a fallu créer, selon des règles préétablies, les actions et les enchainements du jeu, prévoir l’affichage des textes, inclure les moyens d’interaction pour le visiteur. L’étape suivante a nécessité une création graphique concernant l’harmonie des couleurs et des polices de caractère. Finalement, les images vidéo ont été incrustées dans le corps du jeu pour former un produit de synthèse.
<br />Dans cette installation, j’ai également introduis une dimension politique exposée à travers une métaphore reposant sur la difficulté disproportionnée à atteindre un but : la longue marche des Turcs vers l’Union européenne. Ces derniers se voient opposer chaque jour de nouvelles règles, de nouveaux critères qui paraissent comme autant d’obstacles qui retardent l’adhésion de leur pays. Face aux tergiversations des pays comme la France qui remettent en cause un ancrage pourtant confirmé par des traités, les Turcs concluent donc à un rejet antimusulman.</span>

<br /><span style="color:#666666;">Il s’agit d’une installation vidéo interactive ludique et éducative. L’installation se présente sous la forme d’une borne avec un écran muni d’une console qui permet au visiteur d’interagir avec la vidéo. Sur l’écran, le spectateur voit en gros plan les visages de huit personnes avec une expression figée et neutre. Dès lors, il démarre le jeu et doit répondre à des questions plus ou moins faciles sur la Turquie par Vrai ou par Faux. Selon l’exactitude des réponses, les visages réagissent : ils expriment la colère en cas d’accumulation de mauvaises réponses et la joie dans le cas contraire. Cependant, l’accent est porté sur les mauvaises réponses et les visages tendent à réagir de façon plus virulente à celles-ci. Le jeu se termine quand les visages atteignent un certain degré d’exultation.</span>

Everyday gestures of touch have dozens of different figural kinds and meanings across Turkey depending on the region and the micro-culture. From Black Sea to Mediterranean, from mountains of the east to Aegean seaside hugs, greetings and tactile communication styles are very diverse. Most of the time this diversity can only be understood when one spends a good amount of time in these areas. Different than many cultures across the world, in the macro-culture that gathers all the micro-cultures of Turkiye, touching between strangers and friends/family is accepted as a very natural, common and necessary aspect of everyday life.<br />Folkloric dances are a very good representation of Turkish body language. They are performed in weddings, festivals, religious and non-religious holiday celebrations. Each city has its own set of folkloric dances and depending on the region the styles, costumes, movements and music change dramatically. The style differences of the movements create a very diverse body language but one thing that is common between all the different regions is the closeness of the bodies to each other.<br />In Turkish culture the concept of personal space and body usage has unique codes to it. These codes usually involve a close relationship with other bodies and they are so well knit into the culture that when Turkish people visit other countries for the first time they start to realize these codes that have constructed their body language.<br />Showing closeness and genuineness is one of these codes. Most commonly when Turkish people see a friend or meet a new person, they give each other kisses on both cheeks and usually a good tight hug. This action is accepted as a very common way of showing sincerity.<br />Conveying unity is another code. For example the audiences in soccer games are always in extremely close contact. In the grandstands even before the game starts the fans hug each other and dance together even though they see each other for the first time. And after each goal, the celebrations turn into hugs and kisses.<br />A different one of these codes is respect. When greeting elders of certain age, people kiss the elder’s hand and take the hand to their forehead. This is a non gender specific gesture and the age of the elder that would expect to receive this kind of greeting would vary depending on the region and if the place is a city or a village. In some places, this gesture is so important that not doing it could be perceived as a sign of disrespect.<br />These codes effectively construct the basis of the body language of Turkish people. When enough attention is paid, these gestures can be seen in various kinds of cultural representations from common and daily actions to artistic platforms like traditional puppetry theater “Hacivat and Karagoz”.<br />Intouch is an interactive video installation that aims to bring forth the Turkish perception of the body in relation to other bodies. As the viewer approaches the installation they see a picture of two hands and in between them a projection. In the projection area there is another sculpted hand reaching out. When the users approach the installation they can see that there is a dark video playing and the pixels of it are constantly changing their hue and saturation. So users can't really understand what the video is. If they reach out and touch the sculpted hand, the pixels slowly find their own color and the footage of people from Turkiye become visible. The footage reveals different aspects of cultural body usage as a way of communication. The connection requires patience and effort from the users’ side; therefore they have to stay in touch for sometime for the pixels to reveal the footage. When the users approach the installation they can see that there is a dark video playing and the pixels of it are constantly changing their hue and saturation. So the users can't really understand what the video is. If they reach out and touch the sculpted hand, the pixels slowly find their own color and the footage of people from Turkiye become visible. The footage reveals different aspects of cultural body usage as a way of communication. The connection requires patience and effort from the users’ side; therefore they have to stay in touch for some time for the pixels to reveal the footage. One of those stories is connected to the heart of the city, one of the oldest residential districts of Istanbul named Galata. There has been living a ritual silently since 1491, constantly calling people to peace, art and science in the Galata Mevlevihanesi (Whirling Dervish Hall) for centuries. This centre of music and science has contributed tremendously to Turkish culture. Many people were gathering around trained on miscellaneous branches of art and got important successes in the scientific area. Religious, racial and language differences are not barriers for people gathering around Mevlevihane. Music, breath and movement are the only essentials in this practice.<br />The idea of The Breath of Life came with a desire to explore the interaction between the body movement, breath and the corresponding human emotion. The choice of Ney (Turkish traditional blowing instrument) for this project is due to its analogy to the human body. In Sufi literature, Ney is identified with the human body because both of them come to life through breath. And the seven registers of the Ney are identified with the human body parts.<br />Ney is composed of nine nodes and seven holes. Respectively the human larynx is composed of nine nodes, and the human head, of seven holes; eyes, nose and ears. Moreover, Ney is one of the instruments which have the most similar timbre to the human voice. The aim of the project is to make the visitor experience the relation between the body movement, the breath and sound by practically blowing into the Ney, and thus having a direct contact with the image triggered through the breath.</span><br /><span style="color:#666666;"></span><br /><span style="color:#666666;">Notice</span><br /><span style="color:#666666;">The Breath of Life is an interactive installation supported by video and audio elements by using censors, programmable interface cards, and computers. The visitor is invited into a circular space in which stand a "Ney" (traditional Turkish blowing instrument) and a circular projection screen. As the audience blows into the "Ney" there appears a short video sequence of a moving body. There are many video sequences which will appear corresponding to the blowing intensity of the interactor. La majorité des installations explorent les sensations diverses et la perception de la vie quotidienne à Istanbul en stimulant le toucher, la vue, l’ouïe et le mouvement. J’ai donc eu le désir de travailler sur l’odeur qui, pour moi, occupe une place essentielle dans cette ville.<br />Lieu d’imbrication de plusieurs cultures depuis des millénaires, Istanbul peut aussi se définir comme la ville de synthèse des odeurs. Des senteurs intenses émanent du Bazar égyptien (marché aux épices), des restaurants de kebab, des marchés aux poissons, des points de vente de pain et de poisson au bord de la Corne d’or, des cafés turcs, des narguilés sur les terrasses, du thé turc et du simit (pain turc au sésame) que l’on consomme dans les vapeurs qui traversent le Bosphore, de l’eau de Cologne citron ou lavande, sans oublier les transports en commun, les foules, les poubelles, etc. Toutes ces odeurs et beaucoup d’autres abondent et circulent librement dans la ville.<br />Ma seconde motivation reflète une simple réalité : les installations interactives privilégient les sens de la vue, de l’ouïe et même du toucher sur les autres. Pourtant l’odeur occupe une place particulière dans la littérature. Baudelaire et Proust ont mis l’accent sur celle-ci et l’ont associée à une sensation et à la « mémoire involontaire ».<br />Les dispositifs technologiques et les environnements interactifs donnent aux visiteurs la possibilité d’expérimenter plusieurs sens à la fois, comme par exemple visionner en touchant, écouter en se déplaçant. Michel Bernard mentionne l’œil qui écoute dans son article « Sens et fiction, ou les effets étranges de trois chiasmes sensoriels » en parlant du chiasme inter-sensoriel. L’odorat ne trouve pas sa place dans ce genre d’installation car il est plus difficile de la contrôler que l’image et le son. De surcroit, les odeurs sont volatiles donc éphémères alors que l’on peut répéter à l’infini une image ou un son enregistré. Par conséquent, travailler sur l’odeur et ses associations m’offrait de nouveaux champs à explorer. C’est pourquoi l’installation porte le sous-titre de hyperosmia qui se définit comme l’exacerbation de l’odorat.<br />Cette installation est en quelque sorte le point de conclusion des installations que j’avais effectuées auparavant – Entre-deux et Encounters – des œuvres expérimentales sur le mouvement et la texture du corps respectivement, en relation avec les objets mécaniques et l’effet naturel de l’environnement. La première a été réalisée à Paris lors d’un atelier de vidéo-danse et la deuxième à Celrà-Girone lors d’une résidence à L’animal a l’esquena. Il s’agissait dans ces installations de visionner simultanément les différentes parties du corps en gros plan et le mouvement des machines et des textures. Ici, les séquences vidéo de corps vont être déroulées en fonction des odeurs qui seront dégagées lors du déplacement des visiteurs.<br />Cette installation a vu le jour grâce au collectif boDig. Je remercie particulièrement Gülay et Kemal Yiğitcan ainsi que Cem Uzunoğlu pour la partie interactive. </span></p><p><span style="color:#666666;">Notice<br /></span><span style="color:#666666;">It is almost impossible not to recognize the clash of various kinds of scent in the city of Istanbul. Encounters_2/Hyperosmia is an interactive olfactive video installation which seeks to give the visitor a perception of the city through smell. There are three screens on the wall and a box with holes below them. As the visitor approaches one of the three screens, a particular scent will be emanated from the box below through a sensor that triggers the fan. While the visitor inhales the smell, there will be short video sequences of the body parts on the screen in relation to the scent. If there are three people approaching the screens at the same time, there will be a combination of three scents in the space. Its range of dynamics is a product of many different civilizations that have been born and developed in this geography. From architecture to textile, culinary to music, multiculturalism is the essence that composes the roots of the city and feeds every living, surviving and developing aspect.<br />Usually we recognize and think of time as a continuous flow but in Istanbul with imagination and inspiration, time and space open into various dimensions. Istanbul’s historical architectural ruins and cultural layers existing on top of each other create a feeling as if; a person exists now and here but also in the “here” which was very different years and years ago. In the perception, this rupture can lead the way for the person to ease the boundaries of reality and let the imagination create new historical layers of the body itself.<br />When one walks in the places like Grand Bazaar where the merchants of the Silk Road used to walk, the magnificent power of the city on people divides the history of the body and the history of time into layers, creating a synthesized body perception. The material reality of the body dissolves into different moments that continue in their own way and the space reflects its current actuality as well as its historical authenticity.<br /></p></span><p><span style="color:#666666;">Notice<br />Inspired by this concept, The Crowd In Us aims to create an architecture that brings forth this multilayered feeling of time that exists in this city. It creates 3 matrices of time; present, 5 seconds ago and a pre-recorded time, mixes these matrices together and creates one visual matrix where all the different times exist in one space. When the viewer steps in front of the projection wall what they see is their own live video footage and 5 seconds ago and a recording of a place in Istanbul. The audience has the opportunity to interact with the past since the past becomes the future in this continuous flow of different times. And they have the possibility to arrange their movements according to the way they would like to foresee the future interacting with the past. It is like a living organism connecting the two different worlds, the East and the West. It has its own addictive and chaotic vibe. As a result of its geographical, social, cultural and religious properties, Istanbul has a unique soundscape. But most importantly, what makes it, are the people living in.<br />What makes a person alive is his/her heartbeat. The project needs at least one person’s heartbeat to start living. It uses the people’s heartbeats to play or manipulate the sounds of Istanbul. The recordings are taken from different parts of the city, showing the everyday sounds that people in Istanbul hear, but they are usually too busy to appreciate. Istanbul is a very crowded city, as more people are connected; the outcoming sound becomes more flourished as the city.<br />Istanbul is a city of integration. If you look at the different parts of the city, you would see that even if some elements are more dominant than the others, they are indistinguishable. You can also hear this in the recordings, because the sounds are recorded outside. The recordings aim one sound, but while recording it the other sounds interfere, which creates the overall ambiance.<br />The work is exhibited in an isolated area, aurally and visually. The visually isolated area creates more sensitivity in the aural sense, and to make this effect even more sensitive, it is recommended to use the blindfolds. This has been told beautifully by the great Turkish poet, Orhan Veli Kanık’s poem, “I’m listening to Istanbul with my eyes closed”.<br />The project was first developed as a new musical interface. Everybody has a natural source of rhythm, the heartbeat. The project questions the relationship between talent and music creation. With the widespreading of the electronic music, the music started to be assembled than composed. By using the heartbeat it was planned to create a more natural and dynamic music. The use of heartbeat also brings a sentimental value to the project. And connecting a person or people to a machine creates a new form of being which exists in both real and cyber world.</span><br /><span style="color:#666666;"></span><br /><span style="color:#666666;">Notice<br />Living Istanbul is a sound installation which works with the visitors’ pulses. The visitors are invited to sit on the benches in the dark space, having attached the electrodes on the specific spots of their body as indicated on the instructions sheet. There are samples edited from various recordings of the city’s daily sounds. There can be four people participating to the creation of sound according to different pulses. The installation is made of several non-medical custom made electrocardiograms which the users are connected through disposable electrodes. And would you dance more freely? This wearable project is inspired by the oriental belly dancing style. Visitors just wear the product, and dance. Music is generated from the computer, but controlled by the user. The recordings are taken from oriental instruments (hand cymbals, darbouka).<br />The clothes become a part of our organic being as we wear them. But what happens if the clothing has inorganic components like sensors or RF transceivers? As we wear the product, it augments our body, and with the given setup, it gives the ability to control some parameters in the music. But the gestures to control the system are not by turning some knobs or pressing buttons, but by dancing. This results in a contradiction to the conventional dance paradigm, where the dancer tries to keep up with the music. The project also experiments on the effect of the relationship between music and dance. It may not be easy to break the habit of listening to the music and trying to dance accordingly, but the users are encouraged to do so.<br />When the user wears the product, the overall being becomes a synthesis of both organic and inorganic components. There is a mutual relationship between the two parts, in order to create an aurally and visually aesthetic performance. As the performer dances freely, the sound is manipulated by the movement of the performer through the hardware and software setup. But while it gives this freedom, it also gives feedback to the performer through the aural sense. The user can dance freely, as long as the manipulated sound fits the users’ aural aesthetics.<br />Belly dancing is one of the fundamental elements of the Turkish culture. The project also aims to introduce this element to the users. To overcome the visitors’ reluctance to belly dance, the project eliminates the concern of keeping up with the music. So the system also creates a guideline for the belly dancing novices.<br />This setup constitutes a basis for the future developments for this project. The most important part of the body in this installation, as the name implies, is the belly. But the belly just creates the infrastructure of the whole form. The torso, arms and the head just build upon this base, to create a richer form. </span><br /><span style="color:#666666;"></span><br /><span style="color:#666666;">Notice<br />The Belly-Dancing Kit is a sound installation with a specially designed belt. The visitor is invited to put on the belt, and then move the hips, as indicated on the instruction sheet. The visitor hears the sound as accompaniment to his/her movement. Technically, the work consists of an accelerometer, two buttons, and two RF transceivers. The data read from the accelerometer is passed through a running average filter and then used to manipulate the recordings. The buttons in the hand cymbals are used just as accompaniment to the sound. For some it is a source of income, for some a megapolis of various luxuries, for some – even though in dwindling numbers – their homeland and precious heirloom and yet for some an indispensible city of arts. And of course it is impossible to ignore, how this virtually schizophrenic city of people living in a tangled harmony, takes its toll on our lives and bodies.<br />We are constantly fed mountains of positive and negative experiences by this city. One day it will trap us in the slow lane for two hours for a fifteen minute drive, the other day it releases our minds and souls with the breathtaking scenery of Bosphorus. Sometimes it takes our cherished memories away, replacing a building we knew for so long with a parking lot. Yet sometimes it beckons us to drink some tea in a garden full of green. We are living daily, squeezed in ever shrinking spaces enclosed by people, buildings, cars and rules. We are constantly suppressing our urge to gaze at the horizon below pristine skies, only to put ourselves into place in the jigsaw puzzle that is the complicated but promising life in a big city.<br />Urbanization is the physical growth of urban areas from rural areas as a result of population immigration to an existing urban area. According to the U.N. Reports, by the year 2050 two thirds of human population will be living in towns and cities. Urbanization occurred naturally from individual and corporate efforts to reduce time and expense in commuting and transportation while improving opportunities for job, education and housing.Urban Squeeze deals with ongoing contraction and sophistication of living spaces and escalating complexity of social contracts caused by rapid urbanization and its effects on human body, perception and social life. </span><br /><span style="color:#666666;"></span><br /><span style="color:#666666;">Notice<br />This project reflects the rapid overgrowth of Istanbul’s urban structure and the respective constant diminution of the personal space of its inhabitants. The installation is made of a space like a corridor at the end of which there is a screen with a video projection. The video is depicting the fast urbanization process of a city. As the visitor enters the space to see the projection, a kinetic wall starts to move from behind. The visitor has no other chance than to move towards the projection until he/she has to leave the room from another exit. One is a resonant « mass » that seems to move like water in a wading pool – favoring different pitches depending on the area of movement. Taking as structure, an old form in Turkish Classical Music, it proposes particular approaches to contemporary performance by suggesting ‘improvising’ rather than constructing, ‘receiving’ rather than creating, and ‘intuiting’ rather than planning.</span><br /><br /><span style="color:#666666;">This performance opens a delicate space for immersion through the practice of taksim. Taksim is originally the improvisational part without rhythm in Turkish Classical Music.
